The Elphin Diocesan Census was taken in 1749 at the behest of Edward Synge, Bishop of Elphin.
This census covers 51 parishes in County Roscommon, nine parishes in County Galway, and 13 parishes in County Sligo. The returns are arranged by parish, townland, names of heads of household (some include the first name of the householder’s wife), religion, profession, number of children and number of servants.
The original manuscript is held at the National Archives of Ireland.
Names with the prefix Mc, Fitz and O are indexed by the first letter following the prefix.
Letters underlined indicate a name being spelt with or without the letter.
These indexes were prepared in November 1987 by Peter Manning FIGRS. They are protected by international copyright laws and should not be copied or distributed without the written permission of the IGRS.
