The IGRS is saddened to announce the death of Richard Flatman, a former IGRS member of longstanding and Fellow of the Society, who died on Thursday 3rd March 2016 aged 72.
Richard was widely known and well liked in Irish genealogy circles, serving at various times as treasurer for both the Irish Family History Society and the Ireland Branch of the Irish Genealogical Research Society. He was chairman of the IGRSs Ireland Branch committee during the years 2005 to 2008 and also served on the IGRS Council for the years 2000 to 2008.
He was editor of the Ireland Branch’s Millennium Project, which was the publication of its large collection of gravestone transcriptions from across Ireland under the title Tombstone Inscriptions, comprising two huge volumes running to 1,752 pages. This project stands testament to his dedication to, and love of, Irish genealogy.
In retirement Richard travelled widely, visiting many exotic places around the world. His trips also allowed him to enjoy his skill in photography. His photographs of the natural world were always breathtaking, particularly those of orchids which he had a keen eye for.
On behalf of the Society the Council wishes to express its condolences Richard’s family. He will be missed by a wide circle of friends. The details of his funeral can be found here.
