Welcome to the Irish Genealogical Research Society’s website where we are sure you will find lots of interesting information and material to further your Irish family history research. Perhaps you have some questions? Read on for answers to the most commonly raised queries.
Q. How can I supply some transcribed information for the Early Indexes?
A. Our Indexes Editor would be delighted to hear from you – please contact them via this email.
Q. I have a personal website that contains lots of my research that I would like to share with other members. How do I make others aware of it?
A. Please use the contact form, selecting “Other Member Query” and give us details of your website address in the text box. We will take a look and let you know if it is suitable to be added to the page of Member Websites that we publish. By way of advice, be sure to check that your website is in line with best genealogical practice and be cautious about including personal details of any living persons, even if you have their permission to do so.
Q. I am an IGRS member and I cannot download my e-Bulletin?This may be a problem with whatever anti-virus or firewall software you are using. For example, we have had problems reported with Avast software.
Q. I have just joined the Society but the website keeps asking me to confirm my email.
When you registered for the site you should have received an email from WordPress asking you to confirm you are the registered email owner by clicking on a link. If this has not arrived in your inbox, please check your spam/junk mail folder for it. If you still cannot find it, please contact the Society and we can manually activate your access to the Members area of the website.
Q. I cannot login to the members’ area any more.
If you are a long standing member, remember that in order to facilitate our new forum, we emailed you all to tell you that you need to set up your own personal username and password.
If you are still having problems, it may be that you are just not getting your password right and need to reset it. On the login page, click on “forgot” and follow the instructions to reset your password.
Q. Can the IGRS help with specific questions that I have with my research?
A. The IGRS membership is composed of a wide family of genealogists and family historians, both amateur and professional. We do not undertake paid research but if you would like to engage someone to do this for you, see our page on Commissioning Professional Research.
Our free to view Forum is building up into an invaluable exchange of information and is the best way to reach a wide audience of researchers. However, in order to post your query for all to see, you must be a member of the Society. It is easy to join online and represents great value for money as you will also gain full access to all our unique member resources and other benefits besides.
Q. I would like to get some information from resources in your library.
A. A selection of our library resources are currently free to view for members at our temporary home with the Society of Genealogists in London, with a small fee for non-members – plan your visit with our Library page. If you are unable to visit, there is a free look-up service for members only.
Q. I’ve found a reference to an article in your Irish Genealogist database – how can I see the full article?
A. The Irish Genealogist page contains links where you can search the indexes and either download the article for free (Volume 10 only) or order a back copy of early volumes for a small fee. Volume 11 is also free to search but only members may download the full articles.
