Townlands can be spelled so many conflicting ways that identifying them in the published 1901 edition of the Index of Townlands can be extremely difficult. But help is at hand by searching the published volume, Townlands in Poor Law Unions.
Edited for publication in 1997 by George B. Handran, it is a list of all approximately 60,000 townlands, arranged by District Electoral Division, within the relevant Registrar’s District and, in turn, within the relevant Superintendent Registrar’s District (SRD).
For clarity, SRDs are coterminous with Poor Law Unions (PLUs).
