The IGRS is run by a Council of unpaid volunteer members who give up their time to steer the Society, organise lectures and other events, man the Library, add value to the membership package and all manner of other duties. Their efforts ensure the core tasks of running the Society are fulfilled, but additional pairs of hands are always very, very welcome.
Could you offer a little of your time – either on-going or occasional – to help your Society?
Some current needs:
Family history exhibition helper
We always need extra hands when we are exhibiting at a family history fair. We will need helpers at the next Back to Our Past in Dublin on 20-22nd October 2017.
We need extra pairs of hands for:
Setting up the stall: Can you help on the afternoon/early evening of Thursday 19th October with setting up the stall? There’s a bit of too-ing and fro-ing, but no particularly heavy lifting. Bring your own gaffer tape (only joking!).
Manning the stand: This show is always busy so we need a few members on the stand at all times. It’s always good fun, if a bit frantic at times, and is an important part of the Society’s out-reach programme. We don’t need experts with years of professional experience (although they certainly wouldn’t be turned away!). Most visitors to the show are beginners and want a little guidance on where to start their research so most of our members should be knowledgeable enough to help them. We also aim to put over the benefits of IGRS membership and we may have some special offers that need explaining (you can quickly be brought up to speed on these). We ask that volunteers commit to a stint of at least a couple of hours. We can arrange free admission for any volunteer that can commit to a half-day or longer.
Setting down the stall: Can you help with setting down the stall on the evening of Sunday 22nd? Similar to setting up the stall but in reverse!
If you can help, please email.
Some of our long-standing Council members are administering and creating hugely important databases of genealogically valuable records. More hands are always needed to move these projects along.
Whether you have previously undertaken part in transcribing projects or are a complete beginner, you will be made very welcome, and can be confident that your time and efforts will be adding to the richness of records available to all researchers.
Two projects currently underway through our members are:
Registry of Deeds: Webmaster Nick Reddan FIGRS set up this indexing project in 2007. It passed the milestone of 230,000 index records from the memorial books in March 2017 and continues to thrive. Find out more.
Early Irish marriages: Newsletter Editor Roz McCutcheon FIGRS established this index to include details of marriages discovered in unusual sources (ie not civil registration or mainstream church registers). Find out how to contribute by contacting Roz by email.
Contributing to these kinds of projects is hugely rewarding as you can so clearly see the value of what you are revealing. It is also the kind of volunteer work that most members could offer on an occasional basis as there is no long-term commitment, you can work as and when suits you, and you can work at your own pace.
Why not try it?
