"Kate Molony and the Ladies Land League" by Audrey Mac Cready
The Irish National Ladies Land League kept the show on the road when the male leaders of the Land League were arrested in October 1880. Founded in January of that year in anticipation of the arrests, it was the first political organisation for women in Irish history, and proved to be more radical than its parent.
Audrey's great-great-aunt, Kate Molony, was one of the treasurers. Audrey Mac Cready is Irish and has been an archaeologist, a librarian and an EU official and has finally become what she wanted to be when she was twelve years old – a writer. Genealogy has been a long-time passion and she likes to focus on her female ancestors, as women were so badly written out of history. (That kloppety noise you hear is the sound of a rapidly-approaching hobby horse of hers.) Fortunately, she has several very interesting women in her family tree, Kate Molony being one.
The talk was originally presented to the Ireland Branch of the Society in June 2021, when it was very well received. It is now released for all members to view by kind permission of the author and speaker, Audrey Mac Cready.
