About the IGRS Newsletter Index
The Society’s Newsletter has been published since August 1982 and includes hundreds of birth briefs and notices of members’ interests, which while of genealogical interest would not warrant inclusion in the Society’s annual journal The Irish Genealogist. It also grew to include indexes to collections, along with transcripts and abstracts of genealogical records. In addition, there are lists of new members and changes of addresses of existing members. It also includes other less formal communications. His plan also was to include shorter articles
The first editor was the Michael Leader until March 1991. He was followed by Roz McCutcheon from July 1991 until her death on in March 2023. Since then, the editor has been Marguerite Fletcher.
The Newsletter contains many references to family names, all of which have been included in the Family Names Index. Different people have been involved in the indexing though the earlier volumes were indexed by Terrence T Quirke Jr., while Peter Quirk indexed the volumes from Volume 5 Number 1 onwards with the assistance of other volunteers.
The compilation of the indexes has not always been uniform. While some include the source reference (e.g. bithbrief, query etc.) and occasionally counties noted, others do not. Where they have been included in the original indexes, they have been included too in this consolidated online index.
Unfortunately, for some of the earlier volumes only scanned images were available and these were converted to text using OCR. All the available indexes have been consolidated into one database and uploaded to the Society’s website.
The volume-number-page reference is returned for all visitors, whether members or guests. However, logged-on members are provided with a hyperlink allowing them to view a scan of the relevant edition of the Newsletter. Currently volumes 1 to 3 are available, the remaining volumes will be posted online later in 2025.
