During all of August the IGRS is giving free access to its Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, 1799 Census database. This record set has recently been upgraded and now links the index records to images of the original manuscript record on the website of the Virtual Record Treasury.
The content of the database is taken from a census – or statistical survey – compiled in 1799 and notes vital biographical details about the town’s entire population; people from all walks of life, both Catholic and Protestant, numbering just under 11,000.
The original manuscript - which is now held by the British Library - was compiled by Lieutenant-Colonel William Morton Pitt of the Dorset Militia and comprises data on 1,738 homes and 10,907 individuals.
The dataset was originally launched by the IGRS six years ago, in August 2018. Here is a link to the original news item which includes more detail about the original source.
The Society acknowledges with thanks the kind permission of the British Library to publish the data contained in the Pitt manuscript, and the assistance of the Virtual Record Treasury in linking our index data to the scanned images of the manuscript housed on the VRT website.
