Catholic Parish Register Launch

Thursday 9th July 2015

The National Library of Ireland launched its most ambitious digital project to date.  The Roman Catholic parish records collection comprises some 300 years of records in over 1000 parishes.

The records were launched by An Taoiseach, Mr Enda Kenny along with Minister Heather Humphries, whose department is in charge of our cultural institutions.

The records are freely accessible online.  They are organised by parish and contain images but are not transcribed.  The collection can be searched by name or you can zoom in on a map, which is a major strength of the site, as you can very easily see adjacent parishes.  The images allow you to go directly to a particular month/year or scroll through, as you would on a microfilm.  Contrast, brightness and size can all be adjusted and the image can be flipped to negative.
