Historic Buildings and those who built them: Building Conservation and the work of SPAB Ireland
Via her work in built heritage and with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Ireland, Shóna O'Keeffe will consider the intersections and overlaps between genealogy and historic buildings research.
The impact of the builders, architects and past owners of a building will be examined, highlighting the importance of understanding the people involved. The talk will also include an introduction to the SPAB approach to conservation and its activities in Ireland, focusing on the people, past and present, involved in the construction of our built heritage.
About SPAB Ireland:
In early 2017 a group of Irish SPAB Scholars and Fellows joined together to form SPAB Ireland. SPAB Ireland is the newest branch of the SPAB, and is an active and friendly community that aims to protect and promote the wonderful national built heritage on the whole island of Ireland. SPAB also gives the John Betjeman Award, named in honour of writer, architectural historian and conservation campaigner John Betjeman, who was a member of the SPAB Committee for over two decades, from 1954 to 1977. The Award is given in recognition of a single scheme of repair or conservation.
