IGRS Celebrates 90 Years - new event in Edinburgh announced

Saturday 10th October 2026

IGRS announces an afternoon reception and talk by its chairman at the Irish consulate in Edinburgh to celebrate the Society's 90th anniversary.

2026 heralds the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Genealogical Research Society (IGRS) in 1936. This milestone anniversary is being marked over the course of the year through a global programme of events.

To continue to reflect its international membership and embrace all traditions that contribute to Irish identity throughout the world, the Society today announces an afternoon reception and talk by its chairman at the Irish consulate in Edinburgh.

The event will be held on Saturday 7th November, starting at 2.00pm and closing around 4.00pm. It will be an informal drinks reception to meet and connect with members and others and celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Society's foundation.

Steven Smyrl will talk about the history of the IGRS and its unique place in helping to make good the catastrophic loss of so many records in the destruction of the Public Records Office of Ireland in 1922.

This is an in-person event and is free of charge. It is open to all but places are limited, so early booking is recommended.

Booking and more information is available on the IGRS website Events page

Please note that access to the venue does include two steep flights of steps.

More information about all our 90th anniversary events can be found on the dedicated page of our website HERE.
