2026 heralds the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Genealogical Research Society (IGRS) in 1936. This milestone anniversary is being marked over the course of the year through a global programme of events.
In continuing to reflect its worldwide membership and embrace all traditions that contribute to Irish identity throughout the world, the Society today announces two more online lectures in its international series to end the year of celebration.
Each talk will focus on the Irish in parts of the world far distant from Europe, the first Australasia and the second South America.
Speaking on the subject “From Ireland to Van Diemen's land" Maureen Ferris, an Australian historian, genealogist and curator based in Tasmania will explore Irish settlement of the 1840s and 1850s in the new colony of Van Diemen's Land, now called Tasmania.
This event will be held online via Zoom on Sunday 22nd November starting at 1pm UK/Ireland time (11pm Tasmania time).
In a talk titled "A unique case - the Irish in Argentina" Guillermo MacLoughlin will address a lesser known aspect of the Irish diaspora, the settlement in Argentina, where, today at least half a million Argentines have Irish ancestors.
This event will be held online via Zoom on Wednesday 2nd December starting at 8pm UK/Ireland time (3pm Argentina time).
Both events are free of charge and open to member and non-member. Booking and more information is available on the IGRS website Events page.
