At the recent celebrations marking the Society’s 90th-anniversary held at the National Library of Ireland on Saturday, 12th September, we announced that Mark Goold had been elected a Fellow of the Society in recognition of his distinguished and sustained service to the IGRS.
Mark has been a member of the IGRS since 1996 and joined Council in 2013. Since then, he has been one of its most dependable, conscientious and hardworking members, undertaking a wide range of responsibilities with quiet efficiency, good humour and unwavering commitment. From 2013 to 2019, he served as Membership Secretary, taking responsibility for the Society’s membership records and database and undertaking the many essential tasks involved in their accurate maintenance and administration.
Since completing his term as Membership Secretary, Mark has made an exceptional contribution to the development and ongoing maintenance of the Society’s website. Through his own initiative, he recognised work that needed to be undertaken and effectively created a role for himself that has become indispensable to the Society. He has gone out of his way to master the various aspects of the system, including managing the membership database, creating new pages, posting news items, maintaining online content and issuing communications to members.
His technical expertise, willingness to learn, attention to detail and readiness to give generously of his time have transformed the day-to-day administration and management of the Society’s online presence. Much of this work has taken place quietly behind the scenes.
Fellowship is the Society’s oldest and highest distinction, dating from its earliest years. The first Fellowship was awarded to its founder, Wallace Clare, in 1937. It recognises long-standing members who have made an outstanding and enduring contribution to the IGRS through scholarship, research, or service to the development and administration of the Society. A list of all the Society’s Fellows, which will shortly include Mark, can be found here on the Society’s website.
Mark’s long-standing commitment to the IGRS, together with his substantial contribution to its governance, administration and continuing development, make him a most worthy recipient of the Society’s Fellowship. The Society warmly congratulates Mark on his election as a Fellow and thanks him for his outstanding service.
