The presentation includes aspects of tracing Irish Police ancestors in The Peace Preservation Force (1814-1822), Constabulary of Ireland (1822-1836), Irish Constabulary (1836-1867), Royal Irish Constabulary (1867-1922), Dublin Metropolitan Police (1836-1925), Irish Revenue Police (1832-1857), Cork Civic Patrol (1922-1923), Oriel House Detectives (1922-1923), An Garda Siochana (1922 to date), Royal Ulster Constabulary (1922-2001), The Palestine Gendarmerie (1922-1925). The presentation also provides details of some of the terms & conditions of employment in each of the police forces.
About Jim Herlihy
A 36-year Garda veteran, Jim Herlihy is an Irish police historian and genealogist, a founder member of the Garda Siochana Historical Society. He has written and published three books on the Royal Irish Constabulary, a History and Complete Alphabetical List of the Black and Tans, books on the Dublin Metropolitan Police, a book on the Irish Revenue Police and a biography of the poet, patriot and orator Peter Golden. He has also been the Genealogist / Webmaster / P.R.O. of the RIC & DMP COMMITTEE / THE HARP SOCIETY since 2015.
The talk was presented via Zoom by the Ireland Branch of the Society in October 2024. It is now released for all members to view by kind permission of the author and speaker.
