The 19th century Dublin Merchant Family of Thomas Hodgens and Anne Eskildon By Gay Conroy
Thomas Hodgens and Anne Eskildson married in St Mark’s, Dublin on 11 April 1793. He was born c.1767. As well as we know he was the son of Daniel Hodgens, Rope Manufacturer and Merchant, she was born c.1772, the daughter of Mary Webb and George Eskildson, a Danish timber merchant, who had been appointed Danish Consul in Ireland.
This talk traces the course of their family over the next 100 years, its trials and tribulations, births, marriages and debts … no, no … deaths, to present what might be the story of a possibly average well-to-do Dublin family during the 1800s. Gay Conroy has been a member of the IGRS since 2004. Her present research is focused on 19th century families, mostly from her own family tree. When she started researching them, little did she know how compelling a project it would become.
