Ann Cahill is a retired journalist whose career included stints as news editor and night editor of the Irish Examiner before being Europe Correspondent based in Brussels for 15 years.
"I spent some of my childhood being spoiled by my maternal grandmother, with afternoon tea in hotels where I heard family stories, while from my father I learned about history. Out of this grew my great love for Genealogy."

Fact: great grandparents were Browne and Blake living in Carnacon, Co Mayo.

Best clue: “She spoke with a slight English accent, beautiful manners. Holidays in Bunowen” .

Problem: the curse of the 1840s lack of documentation.

Solution: DNA.

Advantage: Blakes married 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins frequently.

Result: A DNA trail that jumped the 1840s problem to link to the family with the most extensive documentation dating back to the 1200s.
